About

Look closer.

MINZŌRA is a cultural lab for stories, memory and everyday life.

We explore the people, objects, places, images and rituals that quietly shape who we are. We collect what catches our attention, document what might disappear, and create new ways of looking at what we think we already know. Based in Cairo, MINZŌRA looks outward — connecting local stories with wider conversations around identity, culture and contemporary life.

Founded by Menar Halaby.

Philosophy

MINZŌRA looks closer.

We believe culture does not only live in museums, monuments or official archives. It exists in ordinary places, objects, conversations, clothing, photographs, homes, streets, gestures, rituals and memories.

The things we overlook today can become the things we remember tomorrow. MINZŌRA exists to explore those things.

It is interested in the space between personal memory and collective culture, the ordinary and the significant, the past and the present.

Rather than preserving culture as something fixed, MINZŌRA looks at culture as something alive, changing and continuously being made. We document, interpret, question and reimagine.

We don't want to tell people what culture is. We want to ask them to look again.

What MINZŌRA explores

Stories

Personal experiences, interviews, portraits and narratives.

Memory

What we inherit, remember, forget and carry forward.

Objects

Ordinary things that hold extraordinary personal or cultural meaning.

People

The individuals who shape the environments and cultures around them.

Places

Homes, streets, neighbourhoods, cities and landscapes as living archives.

Identity

The ways culture, clothing, language, gender, class, place and memory shape how we see ourselves.

Everyday life

The seemingly insignificant details that reveal something much larger.

Values
Curiosity
Look closer before making assumptions.
Specificity
Real stories are more powerful than generic narratives.
Humanity
People come before aesthetics.
Experimentation
There is no single way to document culture.
Respect
Stories belong to the people who live them.
Contemporary thinking
Culture is alive, not frozen in the past.
Accessibility
Important cultural conversations shouldn't feel inaccessible.
The long-term vision

"We don't want people to simply think: that's a nice cultural website. We want them to think: I've never looked at it that way before."

The ultimate principle of MINZŌRA is simple: Look closer.
